Avoiding aches and discomfort in the sport of running is virtually impossible. It comes with the territory, especially when you are at the peak of training for a long distance race like a marathon. The trouble is knowing when the pain you are feeling is a minor or major issue. You can use the following guidelines to help you decide whether to halt or continue your training.
Soreness and stiffness - It's very common to feel sore and tight after a run and right before a run. It's usually nothing that a one or two mile warm up can't fix. In many cases, it's good to feel sore because that means that your body will soon get stronger. If the pain doesn't go away, or gets worse as the weeks go by, it's most likely an injury. Stretching, massaging, and cold-hot therapy may help. However, you might have to start your taper early or see a sports-medicine professional for treatment.
General aches and pains - Most times it just goes away during your taper, when you start running less and recovering before race day. However, if you notice that the pain is consistently coming from one specific location on your body, it's probably a legitimate injury. In that case, see a sports-medicine professional for treatment.
